Greeting Students, Parents, Community Stakeholder, and Friends:
It
is a pleasure to welcome you to the new Southern Avenue (Charter)
Middle School of Academic Excellence and Technology. Our middle school
promises to be one of the most creative and exciting schools in the
Memphis Community. In addition to regular and advanced academic courses;
the creative arts* classes (Kaleidoscope); this new school will offer a
choice of computer career exploration courses.
Computers are the
future of the world. We want our students to be ready to compete. They
will explore cutting edge careers in: Graphic Design; Digital Design and
Computer Animation; Cartooning; Gaming; Filming; Industrial Design;
Architectural Design; Interior Design; and Digital Music and Production.
We are preparing students to enter a Global and Highly Competitive
Economy. We are preparing students to live anywhere in the world they
choose to live.
President Barack Obama sees “education as the
great equalizer”. It divides those who are living in poverty from those
who are not. It divides those are prepared for the world from those who
are not. It equalizes the playing field. Our students will be winners in
this great divide.
One of the President’s top concerns is the
deterioration of America’s schools. Today, about 1 in 4 students drop
out of high school and America now ranks 24th and 29th respectively
among developed countries in math and science – 10th in the rate of
college completion. Students graduating from high schools with
Certificates of Attendance are relegating themselves to a lifetime of
poverty. Certificates of Attendance are not accepted at any vocational
school, community college or university.
Like President Obama, we
have adopted a New Blueprint for Education for our students. That New
Blueprint for Education is to: establish college and career ready
standards; establish an educational community where “No excuse is
acceptable… No amount of effort is adequate until proven effective”
(school’s motto); establish an institution on the cutting edge computer
technology career exploration while maintaining high academic standards
with highly trained instructors; and establish an educational community
that is inviting and accepting of parents and volunteers to participate
in these phenomenal growth experiences. Your child is destined for
